Smudging and smoke rituals are becoming more and more popular as humanity is beginning to tune into the negative and stressful energies surrounding our modern day homes, offices and thoughts.
Smudging rites can be performed by burning sacred herbs, plants and resins such as sage, sweet grass and frankincense.
Traditionally these offerings, set with great intension have been performed by native populations and in various spiritual ceremonies. It is believed that the ceremony creates transformation and blesses the space and/or participants.
In ancient times the burning of dried sage by Shamans and Healers was practiced to clear people of negativity and promote healing, wisdom and longevity. As we continue to awaken in our New Earth, many of us are beginning to feel a strong calling to perform these potent rituals for support, for wellness and to create a deeper connection with spirit and community.
It is said that the smoke fills and purifies the direct environment. The smoke then ascends and takes with it negative energy making room for our intensions to expand and positivity to cultivate in our body, heart and spirit. Hence, setting an intension as we cleanse a space/person is important to ensure we add light, love and direction to the newly created space.
Here is what you will need:
- A bowl of sand or a shell to hold ash and sage
- Smudge stick (sage, palo santo, cedarwood, lavender)
- Matches
- Fanning tool (feather or fan)
You can chose to make the ritual as formal or informal as you wish. You may like to meditate and calm the mind first, then open by stating your intention. Smudge the person/place by fanning smoke where needed, then conclude with a prayer or mantra to build the strength of the ritual.
It is your ceremony and can look anyway you desire. My main tip is make it feel sacred and give gratitude and reverence to the spirt of the plant you are calling on for support, clearing and healing.
